Could it be hereditary hair loss? Understand your next step

Updated: 2026-10-06

Androgenetic alopecia · Hereditary hair loss

A receding hairline, thinning crown and widening part are different visible patterns. Record changes with similar lighting and angles, then explore possible causes, everyday care and available options.

Look at the trend, not just today's shed hairs

If one area gradually thins, the hairline keeps receding or the part becomes more visible, photographs from different times are more useful. Not shedding heavily does not necessarily mean density is unchanged.

Family history is just one clue

Similar changes in relatives are worth noting, but family history alone is not a diagnosis. A doctor considers the pattern, timing, health and medication history before discussing suitable treatments.

Be clear about what shampoo and hair care can do

Gentle cleansing and scalp comfort care can support everyday condition, but cannot guarantee reversal of hereditary hair loss. Discuss medication, medical treatments and hair transplants with a doctor.

What does a Lavender Hair scalp check look at?

Visible strand thickness, density, oil, surface build-up and scalp comfort provide a starting point for everyday care. Images at 50 to 200 times magnification cannot establish hormonal or hereditary causes on their own, or replace medical diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions, Clear Answers

Start with the essentials, then explore what they mean for your circumstances.

Does fine hair mean hereditary hair loss?

Naturally fine hair, hair-shaft damage and changes in density need separate consideration. Strand thickness alone cannot establish a diagnosis.

Can I rule out hereditary hair loss if nobody in my family is bald?

No. Your own assessment matters more than the hair density of one relative.
